The City of Hammond celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Downtown Hammond Train Station on April 16, 2026. The event brought together city officials and regional economic leaders, marking the start of a project that will improve access, connectivity, and long-term mobility in downtown Hammond.

Larson-Danielson is the general contractor for the new 2,200-square-foot station that will serve as a key connection point along the Monon Corridor train line. Construction will begin this month, and the new train station is expected to open in July 2027.

New Downtown Hammond Train Station Will Expand Transit Access

The Downtown Hammond Train Station will serve as the city’s third transit stop along the new Monon Corridor train line. Located just southeast of Fayette Street and Oakley Avenue, the station will add another important transit connection in downtown Hammond.

The location also provides direct access to the Erie Lackawanna Trail, a 17-mile bike path that begins a few blocks north of the site and stretches southeast to Crown Point. With nearby destinations including the Hammond Public Library, police station, federal courthouse, a brewery, a bank, and new housing development, the station is positioned to support a busy and growing part of the city.

City leaders have described the new station as a transformative hub for Hammond. The $10 million project is funded through revenue generated by the city’s 1% food and beverage tax, reflecting a local investment in infrastructure and future growth.

“This kind of project doesn’t happen by accident, it happens because people at every level made it a priority, and today, we’re seeing the payoff,” City of Hammond Mayor Aaron McDermott said. “We’re not just participating in the growth of Northwest Indiana, we’re helping to lead it.”

Building Community Connections

Larson-Danielson is proud to support the Downtown Hammond Train Station project as it moves from planning into construction. Project Manager Stephen Drabick and Superintendent Dan Cavin are leading the work, providing steady coordination and clear communication as the project progresses.

Designed by Alexander Gorlin Architects, the station will introduce a distinct architectural presence in downtown Hammond. Those design elements will take shape as construction advances, adding both function and character to the space.

The April 16 groundbreaking marked an important step forward for the City of Hammond and the Northwest Indiana region. For Larson-Danielson, this project reflects a continued focus on building infrastructure that supports connectivity, strengthens communities, and delivers long-term value.
